How to do Systems's Research - my perspective.

Here are my thoughts/experiences which might help current/future students.

TL;DR. Participating in implementation challenges and pairing up helps research.

This work evolved due to our participation in DIMACS Implementation Challenge.
- participating in such challenges helps us find the right problem to work on. //Important step for a research scholar.
- Organisers curate the more challenging and more relevant inputs.
- Irrespective of competition results, it is a win-win for research. If we win, we will get recognised. If we do not, we get the baselines (winners' solution code)
- In either case, if we continue to work on it further, we will have a paper out of it.
- Our earlier Steiner work (a result of another implementation Challenge -- PACE) had an excellent leaderboard that quickly evaluated any new idea/heuristics we implemented.
- I wish we/I have a personal dashboard for every research problem we/I work on that also logs (with some scores/metrics) for every new heuristic/code version we attempt.
Pairing up on research works (within and outside the group) always help.
- We had many brainstorming sessions (with/without advisors) with Somesh.
- We had come up with several heuristics/ideas from those sessions. At times debugging too.
- That can push (to perform more) and pulls-up (whenever we feel low) each other. //It happened many times to me.
- If everything goes well, we will have one more paper (at least) out of this CVRP work.

Our paper title "Effective Parallelization of the Vehicle Routing Problem" is accepted at Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO '23), July 15--19, 2023, Lisbon, Portugal My co-authors are: Somesh Singh, Prof. Rupesh Nasre and Prof. N.S.Narayanaswamy.

First reviewing experience

With Rupesh's invitation to subreview a HiPC paper and his tips (below) started my 1st offical review.

Think on these lines:

Critic: Some technical points you could be suspicious / careful about. Point those out, mention your reason for suspicion (without calling it suspicion) and ask.
Audience: Some points you are curious about. Ask those.
Advisor: Some points you can suggest to be done better.
Collaborator: And then some points may come from a high level thinking.

Rajesh finished the review in 4-5 days. Feels:

It was a different experience I thoroughly enjoyed it. But a time-consuming process. .. I had to night out to type in all or full parts -- Ideally, I should have typed in as read.

Rupesh points

.. as we read in document viewer highlight.. writing comments on highlighted portions as we review. .. then go through it again to type out my review, which allows me to reorder the comments based on importance and also to connect some comments which are related (e.g., a certain advantage mentioned in theory is not brought out in experiments). ..The review becomes more important when we are negative. It is crucial to not only highlight issues, but also to suggest ways to improve the work / paper (constructive criticism), so that the authors have a better chance of acceptance in their next submission. The authors then appreciate the review process / conference better, and also reciprocate when they get to review.

First Acceptance!

After multiple attempts to publish our work at ICPP and PPoPP. Our work on Steiner Tree is accepted for Publication at IJPP 2022. This is my first and latest Research work. The research paper "Accelerating Computation of Steiner Trees on GPUs" with my advisors is published in the International Journal of Parallel Programming (IJPP) 2022.

Seminar at TCE

Rajesh's gave an online seminar talk about doing research for the students of TCE. Although Rajesh is not the perfect person (according to Rajesh ;-) to do so, Rajesh had shared the experiences of doing and writing up research works at IIT Madras. The event was conducted as a part of alumni club of IT department. It happened on 04-Sep-2021 18:30. Always happy to contribute something to my Alma mater.

STAR Teaching Assistant award 3rd time!

Rajesh is selected as one of the outstanding teaching assistant (STAR TA) for Jan-May 2021. Rajesh is getting award for the third time. This time, it is for CS1111 - Problem Solving Using Computers. Instructor is Jayalal Sarma. It was very challenging to conduct the lab course online due to pandemic situation. Replit is our saviour without which it might have been a difficult task. CS1111 is a first-year programming course for CS under-graduates. Last time it was for N.S.Narayanaswamy's CS1111, and before that it was for Rupesh Nasres's OOAIA course. This time award ceremony happened online on 03-Sep-2021 17:00. The ~~awards were presented~~ names of awardees were read by HoD CSE. Thank to Krishna Nandivada for making it happen every year.

Rajesh Pandian M is selected as one of the outstanding teaching assistant (STAR TA) for Aug-Dec 2019. This time for CS1111 - Problem Solving Using Computers. Instructor is N.S.Narayanaswamy. It is a first-year programming course for CS under graduate course. Last time it was for Rupesh Nasres's OOAIA course. The award ceremony happened on 23-Jan-2020 at CS25. The awards were present by HoD CSE. Hod said the department selected 30 teaching assistants (Masters+Ph.Ds) out of ~300 TAs. A few faculty members were present (RN,KS,NVK) and a couple of TAs (Gargi+few others spoke) were to share their experiences.

My workflow to publish on domain took lesser time. Now, I can update the site quickly.

Github pages - is my web-hosting space. It is free.
For my domain, I had purchased two year co.in domain from Godaddy (800 INR) -- was un-parked 15 months.
Added custom domain to Gh-pages and enabled https access for free. Thanks Github.

CALDAM Pre-Conference School!

Rajesh has attended the CALDAM Pree-conference school 2019 which happened at IIT Kharagpur between Feb 11-12 2019. It is also called as CALDAM Indo-Italian Pre-Conference School on Algorithms and Combinatorics. There were many good speakers and their talk we very good. Especially Prof. Anil Maheswari, Prof. Ajit Diwan, Prof. Alberto Policriti and Dr. Luca Pappalardo. Travel, Boarding and lodging was provided by IITKGP. Good to see Prof. Ghosh's initiative. Next CALDAM is at Hyderabad.

NVIDIA-IITM Hackathon 2019!

Rajesh has attended the NVIDIA-IITM Hackathon which happened at CSE department, IIT Madras between Jan 24+25 2019. Bharath Kumar was mentoring us. We learned many stuffs including OpenACC, CUDA, Profiling CPU/GPU code ,etc. More details later.

Hello Pelican!

Hello There! I made this website using pelican. The coolest thing about pelican is you do not have to know html to create webpage. I created a few text files (more preciely markdown files) and pelican generated the HTML files for me. Of course you need know the markdown syntax -- That's is not hard too. Moreover, I have enabled the render math add-on. So, any $\LaTeX$ math symbols are rendered automatically.

Installing and setting up pelican takes only few minutes (or few commands).
